Shopee Brazil Livestream Surpasses 1.33 Million BRL in Two Days
At the second Shopee Trends event held August 18-19 in São Paulo, 52 local partner sellers generated over 1.33 million BRL in sales through livestreaming within just two days, fulfilling 22,400 orders and attracting 303,000 new followers. The platform now hosts more than 10,000 livestream sessions daily, with cumulative views surpassing 8 billion since the feature launched in 2022. Shopee noted that livestreaming can lift a seller's daily sales by up to tenfold compared with normal operations. For cross-border sellers eyeing Brazil, the results reinforce live commerce as an essential conversion engine rather than an optional add-on.
Singapore Court Rules Against Seller in Defamation Case Over Negative Review
A Singapore e-commerce seller has lost a defamation lawsuit against a consumer who criticised its delivery and return policies in a Shopee review, and was ordered to pay 4,000 SGD in legal costs. The court found the review accurately reflected the seller's own stated policies, including designated-time delivery, on-the-spot inspection for cosmetic damage, and a 35 SGD redelivery fee for rescheduling, and therefore did not constitute defamation. The judge emphasised that ratings and reviews are vital to the effective functioning of e-commerce platforms, and that sellers operating on such platforms must accept the possibility of unfavourable consumer feedback. The ruling serves as a cautionary reminder for cross-border sellers to handle review-related disputes with care.
Bank Negara Malaysia Holds Rate at 2.75% as Growth Stays Resilient
Bank Negara Malaysia announced on September 3 that it would keep the overnight policy rate unchanged at 2.75%, a decision broadly in line with market expectations. The rate has remained at this level since a 25-basis-point cut in July 2025. The central bank stated that recent indicators point to resilient global growth, supported by robust expansion in the global technology sector, improving supply conditions, and stable labour markets. Malaysia's second-quarter GDP grew 6.0% year-on-year, accelerating from 5.4% in the first quarter. Strong exports and sustained domestic demand underpinned the performance, with electronics and electrical products, services, and liquefied natural gas standing out. Stable monetary conditions and solid growth bode well for consumer spending and e-commerce demand in the coming months.
Philippine Retailers Push to Scrap 10,000-Peso Duty-Free Threshold for Parcels
The Philippine Retailers Association is intensifying pressure on the government to remove the duty-free rule for imported parcels valued below 10,000 pesos (approximately US$170), claiming that goods worth about 57.4 billion pesos entered the country duty-free through e-commerce under this policy in 2023. The group argues the arrangement severely disadvantages local brick-and-mortar retailers and has driven some stores to close. Its stance has now escalated from merely lowering the threshold to fully scrapping the exemption for commercial import parcels, with recommendations submitted to the Department of Finance, the Department of Trade and Industry, and Congress. If adopted, the change would significantly disrupt the low-ticket cross-border shipping models of Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok Shop, pushing sellers toward local warehousing and tax-inclusive pricing.
