Malaysia Factory Output Surges 8.2% in April, Fastest Growth Since 2022

Malaysia's industrial production index rose 8.2% year-on-year in April, the fastest pace since September 2022 and well above the 4% forecast by economists, government data released on Friday showed. The index, covering manufacturing, mining, and electricity output, jumped 10.8% in that month. This strong growth signals robust economic activity in Southeast Asia, potentially boosting consumer demand on Shopee Malaysia. Cross-border sellers should monitor rising purchasing power in the region, which may lead to increased orders for electronics, machinery, and consumer goods.

Ningbo Ocean Shipping Launches Direct Fruit Route, Durian Arrives in 5 Days

Ningbo Ocean Shipping has split its 'Thai-Vietnam Line' into two direct routes, enabling point-to-point shipping from Southeast Asian ports to northern Zhejiang. The transit time for tropical fruits has been cut from 7-8 days to as fast as 5 days, ensuring they reach the Yangtze River Delta within a week. The company has added reefer container slots, increased sailing frequencies, and partnered with Jiaxing Port to open a 'fresh produce green channel' for priority unloading and customs clearance. Since launch, over 2,400 TEUs (nearly 30,000 tons) of tropical fruits have been shipped. Leveraging zero-tariff policies under the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, durians, mangosteens, and other 'Nanyang fruits' enter China at lower prices and higher freshness, supporting peak summer high-end fruit sales.

650 Tons of Chinese Onions Seized at Manila Port for Abandonment, Market Impact

Philippine Customs seized 26 containers of Chinese red onions at the Manila International Container Port, totaling 650 tons valued at 86.86 million pesos (approximately $1.5 million), due to long-term non-delivery and unpaid taxes of around 9.07 million pesos. Although the onions had import permits, their arrival coincided with the Philippine local onion harvest season. The Plant Industry Bureau banned them from the market, citing inadequate storage conditions and food safety risks, to avoid suppressing domestic prices. This case highlights that agricultural trade risks have extended from 'customs clearance' to 'market access.' Exporters are advised to assess destination countries' production cycles, price volatility, and cold chain capabilities before shipping.

Indonesia's New E-Commerce Rules Target Dumping, Not Major Promotions

The Indonesian E-Commerce Association (idEA) clarified that the new Trade Regulation No. 19 of 2026 will not halt major sales events like 11.11 or 12.12, nor ban shipping subsidies, provided promotions comply with guidelines. The regulation's core aim is to combat price manipulation, such as below-cost dumping and unreasonable subsidies, by defining three types of violations. Platforms must report to regulators within three working days of receiving complaints. The association stated the rules are designed to protect local products and MSMEs by curbing disorderly price wars, urging cross-border sellers to adopt fair pricing and avoid predatory strategies to stay compliant in the Indonesian market.
