JPMorgan Raises GDP Growth Forecasts for Singapore and Malaysia

JPMorgan has upgraded its economic outlook for Singapore and Malaysia following stronger-than-expected Q2 performance driven by the AI boom. The bank raised Singapore's 2026 GDP growth forecast from 4.6% to 5.4%, citing robust tech production momentum, and lifted 2027 projections from 2.5% to 4%. For Malaysia, the 2026 forecast was raised from 5.3% to 5.5%, exceeding Bank Negara's earlier 4%-5% range. Unlike previous quarters, manufacturing growth was driven by both tech and non-tech production. JPMorgan reiterated its call for a rate hike in Q4. For cross-border sellers, this signals stronger consumer spending capacity in two key SEA markets, suggesting favorable conditions for expanding sales and marketing efforts in Singapore and Malaysia.

Goldman Sachs Cuts Thailand's 2026 GDP Growth Forecast

Thailand's economy weakened significantly in Q2, prompting Goldman Sachs analysts to lower the 2026 GDP growth forecast from 1.9% to 1.8%. In a report by Chris Poh and Danny Suwanapruti, domestic demand notably softened as both private and public sector consumption declined. Private consumption saw its first contraction since Q3 2021, with widespread declines across services and goods spending. Private investment, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of total investment, remained resilient but was offset by a sharp drop in public investment. This weaker demand environment may dampen Thai consumer spending on e-commerce platforms, suggesting cross-border sellers should adjust inventory and marketing strategies for the Thai market accordingly.

Malaysia's August Palm Oil Exports Rise 3.2% in Early August

According to independent inspection firm AmSpec Agri, Malaysia's palm oil exports from August 1-15, 2026, reached 667,257 tonnes, up 3.2% from 646,438 tonnes in the same period of July. The moderate rebound in early August export activity helped ease pressure from rising inventories in July. Earlier MPOB data showed July palm oil exports grew 14.5% month-on-month to 1.39 million tonnes, while inventories climbed 3.32% to 2.63 million tonnes. For cross-border sellers, palm oil export trends serve as a useful gauge of Malaysia's overall trade health and logistics activity, offering insight into the broader economic conditions that influence consumer demand throughout the region.

France's Constitutional Council Rejects Under-15 Social Media Ban

France's Constitutional Council ruled on the 14th that Article 1 of the "Law on Protecting Minors from Risks Associated with Social Media Use," passed by parliament last month, violates the constitution and has been struck down. The provision would have banned minors under 15 from accessing social media platforms. While this ruling originates from France rather than Southeast Asia, it carries potential global implications for platform regulation. Cross-border sellers operating on social commerce channels should monitor how such regulatory debates evolve, as similar age-restriction proposals could eventually emerge in SEA markets, potentially affecting marketing reach and audience targeting strategies on social platforms.
