Shopee Mexico Mandates Tax Withholding for Third-Party Warehouses

Following a directive from Mexico’s Tax Administration Service, Shopee Mexico has implemented a new tax policy for cross-border orders from third-party warehouses. The platform will automatically collect VAT and income tax from buyers at checkout based on the seller's RFC registration status, eliminating the need for sellers to adjust prices manually. The new rules involve a two-step review: sellers first complete a local business questionnaire, after which the platform determines if RFC documentation is required. The final tax rate—either standard or exempt—is calculated and withheld automatically by the platform, marking a shift toward rigorous platform-led tax compliance in Mexican e-commerce.

Indonesia May Motorcycle Sales Drop 5.13% Year-on-Year

Data from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association shows that May 2026 motorcycle sales fell 5.13% compared to the same period last year. This follows a 28.1% year-on-year increase in April to 520,972 units, and a 17.1% decline in March. The association previously forecast full-year 2026 sales between 6.4 million and 6.7 million units. The data highlights significant monthly fluctuations in Indonesia’s motorcycle market, heavily influenced by seasonal factors such as Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr holidays.

India May Passenger Vehicle Retail Sales Surge 23.25% to 402,591 Units

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) reported on June 8 that India’s total vehicle retail sales in May 2026 reached 2,531,067 units, up 9.55% year-on-year. Within this, passenger vehicle retail sales grew 23.25% to 402,591 units, while commercial vehicle sales rose 5.29% to 83,823 units. The strong growth in passenger vehicles reflects sustained consumer demand, offering opportunities for cross-border sellers in automotive accessories and related categories in the Indian market.

Indonesia Issues New Tech Regulation Centralizing Coal, Palm Oil, and Ferroalloy Exports

Indonesia’s Minister of Trade signed a revised e-commerce regulation on June 4, 2026, expanding oversight from cross-border and social commerce to include in-app marketplaces of ride-hailing platforms and online travel agents (OTAs). The new rules focus on five areas: boosting local product visibility, assisting merchants with licensing, enhancing fee transparency, strengthening consumer protection, and regulating AI-driven promotions. Sellers on these platforms must obtain business licenses with a transition period, while platforms must clearly display rules and establish dispute mechanisms. This means services like GoTo, GrabMart, and Traveloka will face equivalent regulatory scrutiny, impacting cross-border sellers’ access to these channels.
